"Hey, that's cheating!" Roy smiled
smuggly at the other boy. Kon was just too predictable, he always tended to get
upset when losing. He put down his bow, clearly having won.
"No, it's not," he replied, "You got
defenseless, and I was aiming at you. Could have killed you in a real
fight."
"But you're not suppossed to pick up my knife
and use it on your bow like a freackin' arrow, that's cheating!"
"It's not!"
"It's too!"
"Just shut up already." Jason told them.
He was really bored. They were suppossed to hunt something to the fest that
night to celebrate their father's return, but they had seen nothing, not even a
fish to hunt down, so Kon and Roy had decided to spar together for a while...
But Roy always had some trick and Kon was too impatient. "Both of you'd
have lost to me by now in a real fight."
Kyle rolled his eyes at the boy’s bickering. They
tended to get like this when bored, but they needed to find something for the
feast tonight.
“Guys! It’s nearly lunch, time to come back home!”
Dick called, walking towards the other boys in the forest, having been sent to
fetch them to come eat.
"See? It's lunch time already and we have
nothing," Kyle complained. They had sent them to fetch some birds or
squirrels, and sure, it had been raining that morning and most animals were
hiding, but they had actually made not real effort to get anything.
“You guys
didn’t catch anything? You might want to try again after lunch, Grandpa Alfred
and Ms. Moira will be pissed if there’s not enough food for him to cook up.”
Dick said, leading the boys out of the woods.
"There was nothing!" Jason complained
effortly.
"Yeah, besides, they wanted us to catch small
animals, other people will bring bigger ones to the fest, so I don't think they
notice too much." Roy brushed him off. He was glad Oliver was coming back
today, but he had been rather enjoying himself doing as he pleased.
Dick shrugged. “Okay, you’re the one’s Alfred’s
gonna scold, so do what you want.” They wandered back through the village
towards their homes. “You guys worried about your fathers coming home? They’re
gonna get to hear about all the mischief you boys got into.” He laughed.
"Fuck off, Dick, you say it like we're
delinquents or something." Roy replied.
"Yeah, and at least I have not done
anything." Kyle had managed to stay out of trouble just as Dick.
“Well, I’d be a little worried if I were Roy,
Jason, and Kon.” Dick teased, playfully shoving his younger brother. “Dad’s
gonna be pissed about you playing with his sword and scratching it.” He added
to his sibling.
"He's not, 'cause I'm blaming Damian."
All of them knew Jason's youngest brother had a record about disobeying and
weapons.
Dick rolled his eyes. “Good luck with that, better
hope Alfred doesn’t tell on you.” They reached their huts, heading into their
individual homes.
“Hey, kiddo, did you catch anything?” Thea asked
Roy.
"Not really, there was nothing out
there." he went over to his aunt, leaving his bow and quiver on the table,
"And we were out all morning."
“Well that’s okay, I’m sure there’s going to be
plenty of food. You excited for Oliver to come home?”
"Yes, you think he's gonna be happy to see
me?" Connor, Oliver's apparent son had arrived at the village some months
ago, and everyone at home was so excited about it... Even Oliver's mom seemed
happy about it and it's not like the kid was a big deal, he spent the day
playing with Jason's, Kon's and Kyle's little siblings.
“He’s gonna be thrilled to see you, I’m sure he’s
been missing you.” Thea kissed her nephew’s head.
Connor came running into the room then, hugging
Roy’s waist. “Daddy’s coming home today!” He exclaimed excitedly.
"Yeah, great..." Roy tried to free
himself subtly. It's not that he didn't like Connor, but they spent too much
time together as it was. Now he understood what Kon must felt being Clark's
bastard.
“Did you catch anything?” Connor asked, still all
hyper and excited. He ran over to Roy’s bow, playing with it and fiddling with
the arrows. “I wanna learn how to catch stuff too!”
"Oliver will probably teach you soon,"
Thea went over to her youngest nephew. When Oliver invited her to his travel,
she had decided to stay behind in order to get to know the little boy a little
bit more and maybe help him to bond with Roy, but it's not like the elder kid
were making things easy for her, but if not, I will."
Connor hugged his aunt. “How much longer until
daddy gets home?” He asked.
“He should be back shortly after lunch, so you boys
better clean up and make sure you like all nice and bathed, don’t need him
thinking you’ve turned into wild animals.” She teased, ruffling the boy’s hair.
Connor looked more than happy to go to the river
with Roy, and his big brother gave him a little smile and went along with him.
Roy didn't hate him, and even made a decent big brother, but he wasn't really
thrilled about getting to share his aunt and father. Soon enough, they had
finished bathing and got back home.
Connor ate his lunch quickly, hoping that the
faster they got done, the faster the boat would get there. “Roy, I’m done,
let’s go wait for daddy’s boat!” The boy tugged on his brothers shirt, jumping
around excitedly.
"It's too early, Connor, give me a
break."
“But Roy, daddy’s gonna be here soon, don’t you
wanna see the boat come?” Connor pleaded, tugging on him some more. “Please?”
"In a minute, let me finish eating
first." He usually was the first there, but he was tired of
babysitting.
Connor huffed, waiting around for another few
minutes before getting antsy and scurrying out of the home. The boy ran down to
the water, waiting eagerly for the ship.
Thea came back into the kitchen with more food to
cook, the boats were nearly there. "Where's your brother?"
Connor was waiting down at the shore, playing in
the water a little while he waited. Damian and Chris had joined him in the
wait, all the boy’s very eager. Tim and Jon were just getting inside too when
Connor heard Roy calling for him. "I told you to wait, Connor!"
Thea hadn't let him even finish before sending him off to look for his brother.
“But I wanted to wait for daddy and you were taking
so long.” Connor complained, leaving the water to go stand on the shore with
his brother, dripping wet from the knees down.
"Whatever, I'm here already anyways..."
Wasn't thrilled about it, though.
Connor rolled his eyes at his brother’s grumpiness.
“Daddy’s gonna be here soon, Roy, be happy!” The boy gasped, pointing off into
the distance. “The ship! I see the ship!”
And he wasn't the only one happy about it. On the
ship, Oliver could barely resist the urge to jump from the boat already.
"Do you think those kids behaved
themselves?" Bruce could already see his offspring on the shore.
Hal chuckled. “I doubt it, but I’m sure any
mischief was nothing too serious. At least from Kyle.” He said, grinning as
they pulled into the shore.
Connor immediately attempted to climb up the ship
to get to his father, causing the man to chuckle and climb down himself to grab
the boy. Roy had
intended to at least wait until the ship stopped moving, but instead jumped
into it and threw himself at Oliver's arms with a large grin. Oliver grinned, kissing both his boy’s heads while
hugging them. Bruce, Hal, and Clark were doing the same with their own
children.
“How are you boys? You been behaving yourselves?”
Oliver asked, ruffling his kid’s hair.
"How was your travel? Did you see
something?" Roy didn't see any sense in answering such an obvious question
from his dad.
“It was great, buddy, but I missed you two.” Oliver
hugged them each again, tightly. “We saw all sorts of things and peoples.” He
led the boys off the ship to the beach.
“Daddy, there’s gonna be a feast tonight!” Connor
said excitedly, making his father chuckle.
“I know, kiddo, it’s gonna be fun.”
"I wanna go with you next time." Roy
tugged on the man's shirt.
“Maybe in a few years, you’re still too much of a
little thing.” Oliver grinned, ruffling his hair. “Tell me all about what you
boys have been up to. What sort of mischief have you gotten into?” He asked,
leading them home.
"None. What kind of people do you think we
are?" Roy grinned at him again, but the smile fell off his face as soon as
he heard Kon's dad.
"What do you mean you didn't hunt anything?!
Don't come up with excuses, you've been wasting time again, haven't you?!"
Roy tried not to look. He knew Kon and Clark didn't
get along that well, but It was still awkward to be with them.
Kon scowled at his father, already wishing he
wasn’t back. “We weren’t wasting time, there wasn’t anything to hunt since it
rained so much.” He argued back. Although, in reality they had been wasting
lots of time.
“You boys didn’t find anything to hunt?” Oliver
said to his own son, raising an eyebrow.
"It rained a lot... Clark's being a
dick."
“Watch your mouth, Roy.” Oliver scolded. “And it’s
fine, I’m sure there’s gonna be plenty to eat. But you boys need to focus more
on your hunting skills.”
Connor tugged on his father’s shirt. “I wanna go
hunting too. Roy never wants to take me.” He shot his brother a scowl.
"You don't know how to! And I took you
fishing, it's almost the same."
"That's a lame excuse." Clark spoke
again, "As soon as I take your brothers home, we are going back to the
woods and neither of us is coming back until you catch something."
“For fuck’s sake, Dad, there was nothing out there, it’s not a big deal!” Kon argued back.
"It is a big deal that you are neglecting your responsibilities! When we are not here, I expect you to obey and to respect this village's needs."
Clark shook his head unbelievingly. He had just
arrived and the boy was already on his nerves.
"It's your place as the eldest."
"So, the bastard status doesn't count
there?" Kon spat back. It's not like It counted anywhere, but Clark made
the difference very clear all the time.
Clark scowled at him, smacking the boy on the back
of the head. “Don’t take that tone with me, you know what I expect of you. I
won’t have you slacking on your training and hunting.”
Roy rolled his eyes at that. "Can we just
go?" It wasn't fair that Clark got so... Mad, it's not like Kon was the
only one slacking off.
Oliver frowned at Clark, shooting him a look that
said to calm down. “Sure, let’s go home and Thea can tell me all about your
mischiefs.” He grinned, ruffling Roy’s hair.
"We didn't do anything." He insisted,
still smiling a little every time he looked at Ollie. And as far as he knew, he
was saying the truth... He hadn't done anything, and even his grandmother
confirmed it.
"He hasn't done ANYTHING since you left," Moira accused Roy as soon as Oliver asked Thea about the boys.
"He hasn't done ANYTHING since you left," Moira accused Roy as soon as Oliver asked Thea about the boys.
"No one asked you," the boy replied,
shooting her a look.
“Don’t be rude to your grandmother, Roy.” Oliver
scolded, sitting on the couch with Connor on his lap. “Have you not been doing
your chores or practicing hunting?”
"I have," he lied cynically.
"You spent all day outside with the other
brats.”
"I did not!"
"Oh, you did, you haven't helped at all in
here." One thing was living with the boy, but standing such behaviour? Not
Moira Queen.
“Roy don’t argue with your grandmother.” Oliver
said, feeling a headache coming on. “Roy, you know you need to be doing your
chores and obeying even when I’m not here.” He started to lecture.
"I... Why are you believing her and not
me?"
“Because I can see that the house is messier than
usual and the wood pile outside doesn’t have any freshly chopped kindling. And
I know you, you tend to slack when I’m not there to get on you.”
"Fine," he better cut it there. Oliver
barely had time for him anymore, and the last thing he needed was for the man
to get mad just then, "Sorry." He normally wouldn't have given up so
easily, but he didn't want to risk it. Some months ago, Oliver would still have
to stand him even if he was mad, but now Roy didn't want him to get mad and
turn to Connor instead.
Oliver opened his arm not holding Connor, gesturing
Roy over to sit with him. “I need you to start doing what’s expected without me
there to yell at you. You need to listen to your aunt and grandmother.”
"I do listen," Roy leaned against the
man, "But it's so boring sometimes... And we weren't wasting time, we were
sparring and climbing trees and stuff. Funnier stuff," he shot Oliver's
mom a look, snuggling closer. He had been good, Oliver's mom was just being a
bitch.
“Well you can do that and do your chores. And have
you two been keeping up with your studies?” Oliver asked looking at both boys,
running a hand through Roy’s hair.
“Yes.”
"And you, kiddo?" Oliver tickled Connor,
who had actually gotten pretty serious when talking about Roy laziness, trying
not to be asked about it. He wasn't a snitch, but he wasn't a liar either.
“It’s going good. I’ve been learning how to add
numbers.” Connor said, smiling proudly at his new skill.
“Connor has been doing well in his work. I saw
Roy’s teacher at the market yesterday and he said you haven’t been doing well
on his exams.” Moira said accusingly to her grandson.
"And who asked you, come again?"
“Roy, watch the attitude.” Oliver warned. “Is she
right, have you been dipping in grades?”
"Just a little, it's impossible to get
everything correct all the time. Not a big deal." Not fair, he just wanted
to be with his dad for a while and listen about his travel, not to be there
while that witch told on him.
“Well, make sure you bring up your marks, I want
you doing well.” Oliver kissed his head. “You boys should start getting ready
for the feast, make sure you’re all changed and washed up.”
"Again?" They had washed up already in
the river.
“Well, just wash your hands.” Oliver ordered. “I
want you boys looking nice, the whole village will be there.” Oliver, Hal,
Clark, and Bruce were well respected in the village and looked on as leaders.
They liked their children to be behaved and tidy so it didn’t reflect poorly on
them.
Roy resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Didn't
Oliver understand they had already washed? It was too cold to bath twice
anyways. Well, at least he was home already. "Love you,
daddy," he wrapped his arms on the man's neck. He liked staying with Thea,
but it was not the same.
“Love you too, buddy.” Oliver kissed his temple.
“I’ve missed you two.”
Connor giggled, hugging his father as well before
getting up and running off to go wash his hands and change his clothes. “Come
on Roy!” He urged his brother, who followed Connor to wash his hands and then
just waited for the feast.
"I didn't like how Jon's dad talked to his brother," Connor commented Roy.
“It’s their family business. Don’t get involved in
that stuff.” Oliver said, coming up behind them to wash his own hands. “Clark
is a good man, he’s just hard on Kon.”
"He's a dick with him." Roy replied, and
it's not that he wanted to be rude, it was just the word that fit him best.
“Watch your mouth, Roy.” Oliver scolded. “I don’t
like this attitude you’ve picked up.” He added, frowning at him. “Clark’s not a
dick, he’s just strict with Kon.” Although Oliver did disagree with a lot of
his friend’s parenting, he wouldn’t admit that to his son’s.
"Well, I'm not lying, and it's not fair."
Kon might have a bad temper, but wasn't even close to be a bad kid.
“It might not seem fair, but it’s not our place to
intervene. Clark knows what he’s doing and he’s a good father.”
"If you think so, just sayin' Kon doesn't say
say that." Actually, he had spoken about leaving lots of times, but had
never been pissed enough. Besides, leaving your family like that was equal as a
lot of dishonor to the rest of the family, at least in their village.
“Well, Kon and his father need to hash out their
issues. I don’t always agree with how Clark handles Kon, but he cares for his
son and is doing his best.” Oliver said, although he didn’t really believe it.
“Now come on, it’s nearly time for the feast to start.” He picked up his
youngest son, leading them back home.
Once they arrived, Connor and Roy went looking for
the other kids, which weren't so hard to locate since they usually sat close to
the main families' table.
Roy sat beside the others. "What's with the face?" Jason could try and hit whoever dared to say it, but he was pouting.
“My father found out about me scratching his damned
sword.” Jason complained. “I’m pretty sure Dick told on me.” He added, scowling
in the direction of where his elder brother stood a ways away.
"You sure?" Roy didn't think so...
Jason shrugged. “Probably not, but he was still all
smug when dad whooped me for it.”
"That's bad," he never knew what to say
when Dick and Jason fought, both of them were his friends, and besides, he
didn't have experience fighting with siblings... Connor didn't count, because
they never argued that bad.
Jason shrugged, shooting Dick another glare.
Kon came over then, sitting with his friends. “My
dad’s driving me fucking crazy already.” He complained with a groan.
"What happened with that?"
“He’s been yelling at me the whole time he’s been
home. I’m so fucking sick of him.” Kon complained, scowling at Jon and Chris
when they came over to play with Connor. He didn’t dislike his siblings, he
just hated how they were favored.
Neither Roy nor Jason knew how to cheer him
up.
"Maybe you could stay over at my house today,"
Jason invited him.
"Or stay at mine's," Roy suggested,
"No offense, Jay, but I don't think Bruce'll let you at least right
now."
Jason nodded, Roy was probably right. “I doubt
he’ll let me stay over anywhere. He’s too pissed at me right now to let me have
any fun.” Kon grumbled. “I swear, the first chance I get I’m out of this
village and away from him.”
"You sure?" Jason and Roy had been pretty
mad with their families before, but never THAT much.
“It’s not like he wants me around anyway.” Kon
said, looking over at his father, who was playing with his younger brothers.
“I’m just his bastard.”
Roy looked around to make sure no one was
listening. "Well, Connor's Ollie's bastard too and it's fine...
Maybe he's just... You know, not used to the idea yet?"
“Well, I’m sick of waiting for him to get used to
having a bastard kid. Ollie might just be a better dad than Clark.” Kon said,
sighing when they were called over to go sit with their fathers to eat.
"I'm sorry."
"Me too, the guy's a dick," maybe some
months ago, Kon'd have gotten mad at Jason for saying that, but right that
moment he didn't care.
“Yeah, for now I’m stuck with him though.” Kon
frowned, going over and sitting at the main table with all the important
families, so all their families.
"Did you catch something?" Clark asked
Kon as soon as he saw him.
Kon sighed at the question. He’d caught a tiny fish
after several hours, although he knew it wouldn’t be big enough for his father.
“Yeah, a fish.” He said, not going into detail about the size.
"Well, at least. Had you not wasted so much
time earlier, you'd have hunted more than A fish, but if you like things the
hard way, then so be it."
Kon rolled his eyes. “I did what you asked, can you
not let anything go?” He complained. “The weather’s shitty, so hunting’s gonna
be shitty.”
"Watch your mouth, this is the last time I
bother warning you."
Kon glared at him while his younger brothers
watched the two of them worriedly. “Whatever, just leave me alone.”
"That's fine, Kon," Jason sat beside him,
almost in front of Clark and a few seats from Bruce, "I didn't hunt
anything either."
"Yeah, me neither, rain's a bitch." Roy sat with Jason and Kon smiled slightly at his friends.
Oliver gave his son a slightly disapproving look
for getting in between Kon and Clark’s dispute, but didn’t scold him.
“Daddy, why are you mad at Kon?” Chris asked his
father.
"I'm not mad, but when you have
responsibilities, you can't ignore them."
Kon rolled his eyes. “I don’t ignore my
responsibilities. I’m the one who’s been taking care of the house while you
were gone.”
"Could you stop with the backtalking already?
I'm trying to explain something to your brothers."
“You’re talking crap about me to them, like usual.”
Kon snapped at him, not caring that they were in public.
What he didn't expect was the slap across the face
he received next.
