"Stop it, you're going to get me in
trouble!" Elijah had accompanied him to fish, but was playing in the water
instead. "I need to catch dinner."
“We have plenty of time to fish, let’s play for a bit.” Elijah
said, splashing around.
"No, you know father's been
stricter lately, I don't want him to yell at me again."
“He won’t yell because we’ll catch fish
eventually. Just relax, Nik.”
"You really think so?"
“I’m sure we will. Father won’t know we
had a bit of fun before.”
Although the boy was kind of nervous
about the possibilities, Elijah was always right..."Fine, like an hour or two?"
“Yeah, then we’ll fish.” Elijah agreed.
They swam for a bit before starting to fish.
But, unexpectedly, it started raining
hard soon, and the river started getting quite turbulent to fish on it.
"Let's stay five more
minutes," Niklaus pleaded his brother, who insisted on going home already.
“It’s too dangerous, Niklaus. Father
will be upset if we stay any longer. He’ll understand that the rain stopped us
from catching anything.”
"No, because we left since
morning!"
“We’ll just say they weren’t biting.
He’ll understand.” Although Elijah wasn’t so sure.
"No, I'm not coming."
“Yes, you are. It’s dangerous out and
father will be even more furious if you stay.”
"You go if you're so worried about
it."
“Fine. But don’t come crying to me when
Dad whoops you for staying out.”
"He'll whoop you for not getting
food."
“He’ll understand.” Elijah turned to go
back to their home.
"We'll see," the boy
stubbornly stayed there.
Elijah went back home, soaking wet and
freezing when he arrived.
"Where on earth were you,
boys?!" His father roared as soon as he heard the door.
“It’s just me. We were out fishing, Nik
stayed to try and catch something.” Elijah explained.
"He did what?!"
“He’s worried you’ll be mad we couldn’t
catch anything. He wants to try to get some fish.”
"Is he stupid or what?" He
groaned, "Start a fire to dry yourself and look after your brother, I'll
go get that boy."
“Don’t be mad at him, father, he just
didn’t want you angry at us for not catching anything.”
"Do not tell me how to handle that
boy. Go watch your brother."
Elijah scowled, hating how angry his
father got with Nik. “Just don’t hurt him.”
"Excuse me?"
“You heard me. Don’t hurt Nik.” Elijah
said firmly.
His father smacked him in the
mouth. "Don't you dare speaking to me like if I mistreated any of
you."
Elijah flinched. “You don’t mistreat me
and Kol. Not usually at least. But you haven’t been kind to Nik since you found
out he’s not yours.”
"How dare you... I treat all of you
the same way, don't you ever say otherwise."
Elijah rolled his eyes. “You know you
don’t. You would never treat Kol the way you do Nik.”
"I did if Kol misbehaved the same, and
I suggest you reconsider your words from now on, little boy."
“You would never beat Kol like you do
Niklaus. Not to mention how cold you are with him now! You used to tell him
stories and cuddle him, now you refuse to touch him unless you’re hitting him.”
"That's not true!" He raised
his voice, "And I refuse to lose time arguing about this nonsense, I'm
bringing that kid home, you better watch your brother in the meanwhile.”
Elijah glared at him. “Fine.” He turned and stomped inside to watch Kol.
The man stormed out of the house and
headed to the river to look for the boy.
Niklaus, on the other side, was unsuccesfully trying to catch anything with one of his arrows, he was getting desperate because the river was getting so turbulent it was hard to see anything through its water.
Niklaus, on the other side, was unsuccesfully trying to catch anything with one of his arrows, he was getting desperate because the river was getting so turbulent it was hard to see anything through its water.
“Niklaus!” Mikael shouted, finally spotting the child. “Boy, get over
here!” He rushed over, pulling him away from the water. “What are you
thinking?!”
The kid flinched a little at how hard
the man was holding his arm. "I was fishing..."
“You know better than to fish in this weather! You could have killed
yourself!” Mikael lectured, noticing how cold the boy felt. He sighed, starting
to lead him back home.
Nik didn't say anything the whole way
home. At least he hadn't been asked about the fish he was supposed to get.
Mikael tugged the boy inside, noticing how his eldest had extinguished
the fire he had started before . “Elijah, start a fire.” He ordered him, taking
his middle son into the bedroom to change.
The boy took some dry clothes and
started changing as far from the man as possible. He was lucky his father
hadn't hit him, didn't mean he was about to stay close enough for the man to
decide to whoop him.
“You are going to go sit by the fire and have your supper, then we are
going to talk about how dangerous it was to stay at that damn river.” Mikael
said firmly.
Niklaus didn’t know how to react… Talk?
Like talk talk or 'talk'?
"I didn't mean to..."
“You didn’t mean to break my rules by staying? Your brother listened to
me and came home.”
"But you told me to fish too!"
“You should’ve been fishing in the
morning before the rain started.”
"We were!"
“Well then you should’ve caught something then! I’m sure you boys were
just fooling around and not being responsible.”
"We just didn't have good luck
today," the boy tried to look more regretful than scared and tried to hug
the man's middle. "Don't be mad..."
Mikael was furious, partly about the lack of fish, but mostly about how
Nik could have been hurt at the river. He’d been pushing the child away
recently, but found himself still very worried about him. “Niklaus, you know
better than to keep fishing in a storm. If you weren’t having luck then you
come home and tell me that.” Even if he would’ve been angry about it.
"It wasn't that bad."
“It was horrible outside. You could’ve
been killed, Niklaus.” Mikael scolded, kneeling down in front of the boy.
"I... I couldn't come back without
fish."
“You might have been in trouble for not
catching anything. Mostly because I’m sure you and your brother were goofing
around rather than fishing. But that would be nothing compared to the trouble
you’re in now.”
"But I did nothing!" He
started crying. It was not fair, Elijah had told him nothing would happen.
“You were goofing off. And then you disobeyed me by not coming home when
a storm started.” Mikael took the boy’s hand. “Come on, let’s have supper by
the fire.”
"No!" It had been some hard
months for the kid, and he was tired from being outside and done with his
jerkish not-dad. "I don't wanna be with stupid you on the stupid
fire!"
Mikael smacked the boy’s bottom. “You do not speak to me like that.” He
gave the boy a firm look. “Now you either do as you’re told and we can discuss
this later, or I can spank you now and again later.”
"Ow!" His backside still had
bruises from the last whooping he had gotten.
“Now come on, you’re going to eat and warm up.” Mikael tugged the boy
towards the main room.
"Let go off me, Mikael!" His
siblings looked at him in shock.
Mikael growled, sitting on a chair and tugging the boy over his lap and
starting to spank him. He didn’t appreciate being disrespected.
"OW! NOOOO!" It hurt extra
bad. He had just gotten a whooping the day before.
“You do not speak to me like that, little boy!” Mikael continued
swatting.
"STOP!" He hollered, "I
didn't say anything wrong!"
“You do not yell at me! You will do as you are told!”
"STOP HITTING ME!" At least
half of the village could hear them, that was for sure.
Mikael tilted him forward, spanking his thighs. “You either lower your
voice or I’ll keep going.”
"OW! NO, IT HURTS!"
"Let him go," Elijah tried to
hold the man's arm.
“Elijah, take Kol to the bedroom. Now.” Mikael said firmly. He was just
spanking the boy with his hand, it’s not like he was beating him.
"No, you're hurting him." Nik wouldn't
even sit willingly those days, not like he could get spanked every day and live
with it.
“Elijah, you take Kol into that room right now!” Mikael hollered.
“Niklaus, you apologize and we can be done.”
"No, I'm staying here."
"Sorry..."
“Elijah, you either get in the bedroom
now or you’re the next one going over my knee.”
The eldest boy didn't know what to do...
He didn't feel comfortable leaving his little brother there, but he didn't want
to be in trouble either. "But let him go first."
“I will deal with my son the way I see fit. Now go.” Mikael didn’t like
being ordered around by his eldest son. He wanted a private discussion with his
middle child.
"Right, now he's your son,"
Elijah couldn't help himself, but took his little brother to the room once he
realized his mistake.
Mikael clenched his jaw, pissed with his eldest son. He lifted Nik up
and sat him on his lap, holding him firmly. “Now we need to talk.”
"I said sorry already."
“You need to learn how to be respectful, Niklaus. And you need to obey
me when I tell you to come home during storms.”
"I was not disrespectful..."
“So you didn’t yell at me and refuse to do as I said?”
"...It was your fault."
“Excuse me?”
"I didn't wanna be with you, that's
not bad."
“It is bad when you yell at me and tell me no.” Mikael scolded. “And you
need to learn how to listen to me when I tell you to come home. Storms can be
dangerous by the river.”
"Whatever..." He had just
tried to avoid another spanking.
“Now we are going to have supper and you are going to stay in front of
the fire. I don’t want you catching any illness from the cold.” Mikael picked
his son up, setting him down in front of the fireplace with some blankets.
"No, stay," he clutched the
man's leg when he stood up. He had hoped to at least lean against his leg if he
wasn't allowed to sit on his lap just because anymore.
Mikael had been going to make them
supper, but decided to could wait. His son rarely asked him to stay with him
these days. He sat down next to the kid, pulling him onto his lap.
"I'm sorry I'm not yours... If I'm
good, can I be your son again?" The first night the man had known, he had
come home pretty late and drunk, mumbling something about how 'that little
bastard' was not his son or responsibility, to begin with.
Mikael kissed the boy’s hair. “You’re my
son, Nik, no matter what, you’re mine.”
Just hearing that made the kid breathe
way lighter.
"But then, why don't you like me
anymore?" His 'dad' wouldn't let him get close to him, sleep at his bed,
touch him or almost anything.
Mikael rubbed the boy’s back. “I’m sorry
buddy, I’ve been a bad dad to you lately.” He sighed. “It’s not anything you
did, and I’m going to be better from now on. I promise.”
"What do you mean?" He had to ask, everything had been
so confusing lately... Like, stuff he couldn't do, Kol could and stuff.
“I haven’t been treating you right,
Nicky. I’m going to be a better father to you.” Mikael ran a hand through the
kid’s hair.
"Sorry..."
“It’s not anything you did, I am the one
that should apologize. Everything will be as it was before, you’ll see." He held the child closer, decided to make those last days up for his middle son, he was determined to make everything better.
